Chapter 19 Internet Resources Solutions
1. Access the USPTO’s Assignment Database. Use the Advanced Search option.
a. Review the information recorded at Reel 29023, Frame 880. Who was
the original inventor? Who is the assignee? When was the assignment
executed and when was it recorded?
The inventor is Gary W. Flint. The assignee is Apple Inc. The
assignment was executed on December 22, 2011, and recorded
on September 25, 2012.
b. Review the information for U.S. Patent No. 9,143,468. Who is the
assignee? What is the title of the invention?
The assignee is Twitter. The title is “Identifying Relevant
Messages in a Conversation Group.”
2. Access the USPTO database and search for “Published Complaints.” Review the
complaint filed by “Miano” in January 2013. Who was the complaint filed
against, and how much money was paid by Miano to the invention promoter?
The complaint was filed against Arizona Patent Services, Inc.
Miano paid $13,200 to the invention promoter.
[Note: Complaints filed against invention
promoters are becoming more difficult to locate through the
USPTO website. You may wish to ignore this question.]
3. Access the USPTO website and select the Official Gazette. Review the Official
Gazette notices for July 14, 2015. Review “Patents and Serial Numbers Available
for License or Sale.” What is the title of the first patent listed for sale or license?
The title of the patent (No. 8,756,713) is “A hoodie with three
groups of connectors on an opening edge of the hood.”
4. Review Chapter 300 of the MPEP. How would you go about correcting an error
in a recorded assignment document?
The MPEP provides as follows: “If there is an error in the
recorded assignment document (or other document affecting
title) rather than in the cover sheet, the party responsible for
an erroneous document (e.g., the assignor) must either create
and record a new document or make corrections to the original
document and re-record it. If an assignor is not available to
correct an original document or execute a new one, the
assignee may submit an affidavit.”
