THE INDEX
Start in the multi-volume general index found at the end of the books. Once a topic has been located, the researcher will be provided with a reference number, such as 43:387. The researcher would use this number to access information in the main volumes.

MAIN VOLUME
While the spine of the main volumes provide the topical information covered in that section, these books are accessed by the reference number, not the topic. So find the volume covering the reference number supplied by the index. Once the appropriate point in the main volume has been located, Federal Procedure, Lawyer's Edition will provide commentary on multiple rules relevant to the subject matter at hand. This is incredibly helpful since the researcher may locate additional rules relevant to the question that had not been found previously. The publisher also provides many research references to other authorities, both primary and secondary.

MORE . . .
This book is considered secondary authority. It is updated by pocket part, which must be carefully checked for new information or modifications to comments and rules referenced within the main volumes.
