The first seven questions may be answered by accessing the USPTO website.

1. Access the USPTO’s CPC Scheme Page.

a. What is Subclass DO5?
This is for sewing, embroidering, tufting.

b. Select DO5B. What items are classified as DO5B 55/04?
The items are “devices for inserting needles.”

2. Use the search box to locate the roster of patent attorneys and agents. What is the
registration number for Robert MacKichan? When was he registered with the
USPTO?
The registration number is 65,262. He was registered as an
agent on October 5, 2009.

3. Select “Patent Number Search” for patents. Give the title or brief description for
each of the following patents, identify when they will expire, and provide the due
dates for any maintenance payments related to the patents.

a. Utility patent no. 9,089,123
This patent is for a wild game information system. It was filed
on October 19, 2011 (and was issued on July 28, 2015); thus, it
will expire on October 19, 2031. Maintenance fees are due on
January 28, 2019; January 28, 2013; and January 28, 2027.

b. Design patent no. D488,590
This patent is for the ornamental design of a bird feeder. It was
granted April 13, 2004. Thus it expires 14 years after the grant
on April 13, 2018. (If the application had been filed after May
13, 2015, the design patent would expire after 15 years rather
than 14 years.) There are no maintenance fees due for design
patents.

c. Plant patent no. 12,144
This patent is for a philodendron plant named McColley’s
Finale. It was filed on May 13, 1999; thus it expires on May 13,
2019. There are no maintenance fees due for plant patents.

d. Reissue patent no. 42,997
This patent is for a triggered playback of recorded messages to
incoming telephone calls to a cellular phone. It was filed on
February 13, 2007 (and was issued on December 6, 2011); thus
it will expire on February 13, 2027. Maintenance fees are due
on June 6, 2015; June 6, 2019; and June 6, 2023.

4. Select “Quick Search” for patents. Locate a patent whose inventor is James Clint
Cox and whose title is “Dragging apparatus and assembly for hunters.” To which
patent number are you directed?
