CHAPTER CAPSULE
This chapter presents the variety of positions open for paralegals in both the private and government sectors.

 

A. The Paralegal Profession introduces the three primary areas in which paralegal are employed with regard to administrative law: government agencies, law firms, and private businesses. Examples are given of each.

EXPLAIN the fact that paralegal work does not always come with the title “paralegal.” Many positions, especially in private businesses require paralegal skills, but are not advertised as paralegal positions.

 

In addition, Section A introduces the topics of paralegals representing clients in administrative hearings and the ABA guidelines for utilization of paralegals.

EXPLORE the ABA guidelines and how they address the use of paralegals.

 

B. Skills Development and Practical Experience explores the skills needed to be a good administrative law paralegal including the increasing need for computer and internet utilization skills.

COMPARE and CONTRAST the skills needed to be competent administrative law paralegals and those needed in other areas of law.

 

C. The Working Paralegal contains explanations of jury research, employment law, real estate law, and litigation in the private sector. Jury research may appeal to the student who prefers a combination of psychological and evidential factors in the field. Students who enjoy evaluating documents, interviewing clients, and writing may enjoy employment law, real estate law, and litigation.
In the government sector, interesting positions in environmental law, constitutional law, and mediation are discussed. Environmental law is big business since the National Environmental Act of 1970 and may appeal to the paralegal who enjoys corporate real estate, contamination disclosure and ordinance research. Constitutional law may appeal to the student who enjoys changes in laws and historical research.
