WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS
This assignment is only required if you are enrolled in the Immigration Law Specialist Program.
Welcome to the Legal Writing Labs! These labs take you step-by-step through the creation of various legal documents. Since you would normally be able to contact your client and ask questions about the case, you may expand or change the facts if it helps. You are required to prepare two of the three assignments provided below.
The Client
Your client, Beatrice Copeland, is from London, England (U.K.). She is the daughter of a U.S. Air Force officer and is 35 years old. She has never obtained a passport before but now has been transferred to the United States by the company she works for, Defense Systems America, Inc. Her father passed away several years ago, and her mother has just told her that her father was not listed on the birth certificate. Her mother, Rita Copeland, however, has provided an affidavit attesting to Beatrice's parentage, and has included insurance forms that indicate Beatrice as her father's daughter. These insurance forms were filled out by her now deceased father, Henry Copeland.
Assignment 1: Cover Letter
Your assignment is to use the template on this site and request a passport on behalf of Beatrice.
Assignment 2: Complaint for Declaratory Judgment (or Relief)
Use the template on this site and draft a complaint asking for a U.S. Court to declare that Beatrice is, in fact, a U.S. citizen based on her parentage. Please expand on the facts provided to strengthen your complaint.
Assignment 3: Complaint Related to Unfair Employment
Assume that Beatrice's employer has terminated her employment because she has not been able to establish conclusively that she is a U.S. citizen. Use the template on this site and draft a complaint demanding that the company rehire her and recognize her as a U.S. citizen. Please expand on the facts provided to strengthen your complaint.
Assignment Due Date
The assignments must be completed prior to the deadline for completing the program. While you may complete the assignment at any point, it is recommended that you wait until you have completed reading the text book.
Sending the Assignment
The assignments must be sent by using the Drop Box on this site.
Using this Site
After opening a Template using the above tabs, you should do the following:
1. In the Select a Document drop down box on the right, choose the document you are wanting to work on.
2. The drop down Instructions box will provide you with links to help for every element of the document. Those instructions are presented in the order in which the relevant material appears within the document itself. Simply refer to the instructions as you work on your assignment. When you have completed all the steps, you should have a virtually completed document!
3. It is important to remember that the Writing Lab Template will allow you to modify the document, but does not save those changes. If your browser leaves the web page you are working on, your modifications to the document will be lost. It is therefore recommended that you copy and paste your work into Microsoft Word every 5 or 10 minutes to back up your work.
4. Copy and Paste the modified Template to create a new Microsoft Word document.
NOTE: You may want to create the document on a separate sheet of note paper as well. This way, if you get booted off line in the middle of the process, you will not lose all your changes. They will be in your notes. This is especially important if your Internet connection is often lost.
